IPA (2022-2023) Match 3 Recap


Overview

The IPA 2022-2023 tournament resumes with Match 3 on February 4th and 5th.


Vanderbilt, Wesleyan, Pomona, UPenn, Carnegie Mellon, and Waterloo lead their respective groups. Manchester, Oxford, UPenn, Carnegie Mellon, Yale, and Emory show strong performances. Many placement shifts from Match 3.


Group A continues to lead with Vanderbilt albeit a poor performance of 16 points which averages about 4th place. Group A sees no changes in placements. Harvey Mudd, Michigan, MIT, and Tulane are all within contention for the second playoff and wildcard spot. The spread between second and fifth place is only three points. Match 4 and 5 will be significant to these four teams’ success.

Average: 28.17 points, Standard deviation: 9.06 points, Penalties: 1 point.


Group B continues to lead with Wesleyan. A strong performance by Manchester who jumps from fifth to second. Claremont McKenna sits on the other end, losing four placements from second to last. Defending IPA Champion slowly gains momentum with 36 points or roughly an average finish of third place. If the regular season was to end now, Northwestern, Indiana, and Brown are only a two point margin for a wildcard spot.

Average: 27.67 points, Standard deviation: 11.40 points, Penalties: 4 points.


Group C continues to lead with Pomona. Oxford and USC are tied for second. Oxford moves up two places from fourth to second. Cornell loses two spots down to fourth. Cornell not too far behind both teams. Washington University trails the group with a significant gap behind fifth place.

Average: 27.83 points, Standard deviation: 10.91 points, Penalties: 2 points.


Group D continues to lead with UPenn with another strong performance. UPenn sits comfortably up top. Georgia Tech and Northeastern both move up while UC San Diego and Chicago Booth both fall. The bottom four teams in this group, Northeastern, UC San Diego, Chicago Booth, and Columbia Law are all within reach of a wildcard spot. The point margin between third and sixth is only five points. Match 4 will be significant for these teams as we approach the playoffs.

Average: 28 points, Standard deviation: 11.01 points, Penalties: 2 points.


Group E again sees a large change in placements with Carnegie Mellon now leading. Carnegie Mellon, Yale, and Miami all move up while Tufts and Georgetown falls. Strong performances by the two former teams averaging second place across their tables. Deviation across results is large. Wildcard spot at the moment favors Tufts.

Average: 28 points, Standard deviation: 18.18 points, Penalties: 2 points.


Group F continues to lead with Waterloo. Emory outperforms the group with 50 points or an average placement slightly above second place across their tables. Occidental falls two spots. New South Wales, Occidental, and Harvard fight for the wildcard spot. Harvard not too far behind from Occidental.

Average: 28 points, Standard deviation: 10.24 points, Penalties: 2 points.
