IPA (2022-2023) Match 1 Recap


Overview

The IPA 2022-2023 tournament initiated with Match 1 on December 3rd and 4th.


The tournament starts with a regular season consisting of five matches. Each match is made up of five separate sit and go games run simultaneously. All teams roster of five players to play across the tables. Points are accumulated at the end of the match based on every players’ performance. This year’s tournament fosters a field of 36 teams competing for the 2022-2023 IPA title. Brown is the defending and back-to-back IPA champions. Boston University follows with one title to their name.


Vanderbilt, Wesleyan, Pomona, UPenn, Yale, and New South Wales lead off their respective groups to kick off the new season. Pomona and UPenn show strong initial performance.


Group A leads with Vanderbilt with Harvey Mudd closely trailing. Michigan, MIT, and Tulane are all ranked closely with a spread of 1 point between Michigan and the latter two. Boston starts slow and trails the pack. Still many more games to go for Boston to rise up and the middle teams to distinguish themselves. This is Tulane’s first appearance in the IPA.

Average: 27.83 points, Standard deviation: 12.29 points, Penalties: 3 points.


Group B leads with Wesleyan. Northwestern and Claremont McKenna closely following. Defending IPA champions Brown trails the group.

Average: 28.17 points, Standard deviation: 7.73 points, Penalties: 1 point.


Group C leads with a dominant performance by Pomona, averaging 2.2nd place. Cornell holds a strong second place lead. Oxford, NYU, Washington University, and USC will need to show impressive results going forward to catch up with Pomona.

Average: 26.67 points, Standard deviation: 15.78 points, Penalties: 10 points.


Group D leads with a dominant performance by UPenn, averaging 2.4nd place. UCSD holds a strong second place lead. Georgia Tech, Northeastern, and Chicago Booth are all neck and neck. Columbia Law trails by a few. Still many more games to go for Columbia Law to rise up and the middle teams to distinguish themselves.

Group E leads with Yale. Tufts not too far behind. This is Carnegie Mellon’s first appearance in the IPA. Miami not too far behind. Carnegie Mellon performing average in the group.

Average: 28 points, Standard deviation: 8.74 points, Penalties: 2 points.


Group F leads with New South Wales. Waterloo trails by a single point. This is Occidental and Emory’s first appearance in the IPA. Occidental performing above average in the group. Emory, Harvard, and McGill all trail.

Average: 28.33 points, Standard deviation: 10.84 points, Penalties: 0 points.

Updates

Group F matches will be pushed back by two hours to accommodate the time difference for participants in New South Wales. The newly scheduled time will be 3pm PST, 6pm EST, 10am AEDT.


The IPA tournament will resume on January 14th and 15th, 2023.
