IPA (2022 – 2023) Match 1 Recap

Overview

The IPA 2022–2023 tournament began with Match 1 on December 3 and 4.

The tournament starts with a regular season of five matches. Each match is made up of five separate sit-and-go games run at the same time, and each team rosters five players to play across the tables. Points are totaled at the end of each match based on every player’s performance. This year, 36 teams are competing for the 2022–2023 IPA title. Brown is the defending, back-to-back IPA champion, and Boston University follows with one title.

Vanderbilt, Wesleyan, Pomona, UPenn, Yale and New South Wales lead their respective groups to kick off the new season, with Pomona and UPenn showing especially strong starts.

Vanderbilt leads Group A, with Harvey Mudd close behind. Michigan, MIT and Tulane are tightly bunched, with just 1 point separating Michigan from the other two. Boston University starts slowly and trails the pack, but there are still many games left for Boston to climb and for the middle teams to separate themselves. This is Tulane’s first appearance in the IPA.

Pomona leads Group C with a dominant performance, averaging a 2.2 finishing position. Cornell holds a strong second place, while Oxford, NYU, Washington University and USC will need impressive results to catch Pomona.

UPenn leads Group D with a dominant performance, averaging a 2.4 finishing position. UC San Diego holds a strong second place, while Georgia Tech, Northeastern and Chicago Booth are neck and neck. Columbia Law trails by a few points, but there are still many games left for Columbia Law to climb and for the middle teams to separate themselves.

Yale leads Group E, with Tufts and Miami not far behind. This is Carnegie Mellon’s first appearance in the IPA, and the team is performing around the group average.

Updates

Group F matches will be pushed back by two hours to accommodate the time difference for participants in New South Wales. The new start time is 3:00 PM PST / 6:00 PM EST / 10:00 AM AEDT.

The IPA tournament will resume on January 14 and 15, 2023.
