Overview

The IPA 2021–2022 tournament resumed with Match 3 on January 14 and 15.

Columbia Law, Cornell and Georgia Tech continue to extend their leads with consistent performances. Cornell and Georgia Tech dominate their groups, while Auckland improves significantly from last to third as the team fights for Kiwi representation in the postseason.

UNSW continues to lead Group A, arguably the most closely matched group. The spread from first to last place is only 12 points, and the standard deviation of 4.38 points is the lowest of any group. Auckland and UC Davis trade momentum, with Auckland now in third and UC Davis in last. The fight for playoff seats continues, and the wildcard spot is within any team’s grasp.

In Group B, Columbia Law and Manchester move up to claim first and second. Michigan is a quarter point away from a playoff seat, and William & Mary drops from its early lead to fourth but remains in contention.

In Group C, Illinois recovers major ground after a poor Match 2 and now sits in third, edging out McGill and Yale. Match 4 will give a clearer picture of which of these three teams will claim the wildcard spot and possibly a playoff spot. Claremont McKenna improves to first.

Group D sees a few position swaps. Indiana and Princeton trade third and fourth place, and Boston University and Northeastern trade sixth and seventh. Georgia Tech keeps its lead with a healthy margin.

Group E sees close results among the top four teams. Vanderbilt, UPenn, Waterloo and Tufts all need strong results in their last two matches, with only five points separating them.

In Group F, reigning IPA champion Brown again regains lost ground, improving from third to second. UMass put up a strong performance and won Match 3, while Cornell dominates the group and extends its lead over second place.

Updates

There are three changes to the current rules and one change to the relegation system. The rule changes apply from Match 4 onward, and the relegation change also applies to past results. The updated rules are on the Format & Rules (2021 – 2022) page.

The IPA tournament will resume on February 4 and 5, 2022.
