IPA (2022-2023) Match 4 Recap

Overview

The IPA 2022-2023 tournament resumes with Match 4 on February 25th and 26th.

Vanderbilt, Brown, Pomona, UPenn, Carnegie Mellon, and Waterloo lead their respective groups. Defending IPA champion Brown plays excellent poker. The team now leads their group, previously sitting at fifth place.

Group A arguably sits as one of the most competitive groups. Vanderbilt continues to lead. MIT moves up to second from fourth and Tulane moves up from fifth to fourth. Harvey Mudd falls to fifth from second. No change for Michigan or former IPA champion Boston University. Vanderbilt cannot get too comfortable with their current lead. The fight for the second playoff and wildcard spot may be between MIT and Michigan. Tulane and Harvey Mudd are nowhere near out of contention.

Average: 28 points, Standard deviation: 7.56 points, Penalties: 2 points.

Group B sees a surprising performance by Brown. The defending IPA champion moves up to first from fifth. Only a five point gap between Brown and Wesleyan. Wesleyan, Manchester, and Northwestern all fall in placements. Claremont McKenna are now out of playoff contention.

Average: 28 points, Standard deviation: 18.19 points, Penalties: 2 points.

Group C continues to lead with Pomona with another dominant performance. USC and Oxford trades placements with USC now in second. Cornell and NYU are tied. USC slightly favored for at least a wildcard spot. Match 5 will be significant for all teams minus Washington University who demonstrates another terrible performance.

Average: 27.83 points, Standard deviation: 16.58 points, Penalties: 3 points.

Group D once again with UPenn and another dominant performance. The team scores 51 points or about a second place average. UPenn claims with guarantee a playoff spot. The second playoff and wildcard spot is likely between Chicago Booth, UC San Diego, and Georgia Tech. Northeastern and Columbia Law not completely out of contention. Chicago Booth shows a strong performance moving up three placements from fifth to second.

Average: 28.33 points, Standard deviation: 13.38 points, Penalties: 0 points.

Group E continues to see to lead with Carnegie Mellon. Tufts and Yale exchange placements. Carnegie Mellon secures at least a wildcard seat. Tufts and Yale very likely to secure at least one playoff seat or the wildcard seat. Poor performances from Miami, Georgetown, and Victoria.

Average: 28.17 points, Standard deviation: 12.36 points, Penalties: 1 point.

Group F continues to lead with Waterloo. Minimal change with McGill and Harvard swapping places at fifth and sixth, respectively. Waterloo and Emory fight the rest of the group off for their playoff seats. None of the bottom four teams are out of contention of the wildcard spot. Match 5 will be significant for these four teams.

Average: 27.67 points, Standard deviation: 14.43 points, Penalties: 4 points.
